In case you missed it during this week devoted to indigestion and brawling during Black Friday over that toy your child just has to have, the NCAA dropped the hammer on Notre Dame for academic shenanigans that occurred in its once-storied football program. Wayne Gallman Youth Jersey .It was an all-too-familiar lapse in the charade of professional sports franchises operating within our institutions of higher learning: a student trainer handled the schoolwork for several football players who couldnt be bothered with doing it themselves, which led to the Fighting Irish being stripped of two seasons worth of wins. The NCAA delivered a relatively swift punishment that, frankly, appeared a bit too harsh. Notre Dame acknowledged that rules were broken and cooperated in the investigation. There was no indication that the higher-ups were aware of what was going on.But were not here to cry for the Fighting Irish. Were more concerned about another case.Remember North Carolina? The Tar Heels have been mired in a massive academic fraud scandal going back more than two decades that has led to five NCAA charges, a corruption scandal far more troubling and far-reaching than the substitute schoolwork that went on at Notre Dame. Heck, what the Irish did sounds downright quaint by comparison.Yet, the NCAA has still not levied any punishment on Tobacco Road, allowing the case to devolve into a legal mumbo-jumbo that seems to be sending a clear message to future rule-breakers: its best to delay, delay and delay some more. Its now been more than six years since the NCAA first arrived in Chapel Hill to investigate allegations of improper benefits and academic misconduct within the football program. That led to the uncovering of something even worse: sham courses within a department devoted to African-American studies, which were really nothing more than a conduit for athletes to pick up an easy A without being burdened with going to class or doing much in the way of actual schoolwork. An independent investigation by former U.S. Justice Department official Kenneth Wainstein found that some 3,100 students -- roughly half of them athletes from numerous sports -- took bogus courses between 1993 and 2011. At least one prominent former basketball player has come forward to say he was caught up in the scam: Rashad McCants, who helped lead the Tar Heels to the 2005 national championship.Despite a massive body of evidence, North Carolina has yet to face any sort of justice.Instead, this has become the worst episode of Law & Order ever. The NCAA leveled its initial set of charges, including the dreaded lack of institutional control. The school had 90 days to respond, and went right up to the deadline before sending along additional information for the NCAA to review. That led to an amended set of charges, with the most serious allegations still in there. The school responded again, this time with a bunch of procedural arguments that most notably challenged the NCAAs jurisdiction in the case. That led to another hearing, lots of sniping back and forth by the attorneys, and ... well, you get the idea. To get a true glimpse into what this case has become, check here .Clearly, theres no end in sight for this convoluted mess.Meanwhile, Notre Dame is already preparing to appeal the sanctions the NCAA handed down on Tuesday, which included stripping the school of all 21 wins it had during the 2012 and `13 seasons. That wiped out the Fighting Irishs best showing since the 1980s -- a 12-0 regular season and No. 1 ranking before a humiliating 42-14 loss to Alabama in the national championship game. It was another tough blow for the current team, which has endured a 4-7 season heading into Saturdays finale against Southern Cal and faces questions about the future of coach Brian Kelly. Its just a couple of guys made a mistake, and the whole team goes down with it, said offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey, a team captain. We know we won the games. Theyre not going to take that away from us. They can take it away in the record books all they want, but we won the games. The Rev. John Jenkins, Notre Dames president, called it unprecedented to strip a school of wins without serious underlying institutional misconduct. He said the NCAAs ruling wouldnt punish those responsible for the misconduct, but rather will punish coaches, student-athletes and indeed the entire institution who did nothing wrong and, with regard to this case, did everything right. If the folks at Notre Dame sound a bit frustrated, they have every right to be.Theyve felt the wrath of the NCAA, while the Tar Heels remain on the lam. What a travesty.---Paul Newberry is a sports columnist for The Associated Press. Schenn scored the game-winning goal and added two assists to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-1 win over the Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Tuesday. Davis Webb Giants Jersey . Robredo, ranked No. 16, bounced back from an upset loss to Leonardo Mayer in the second round of the Royal Guard Open in Chile last week to down Carreno Busta in 1 hour, 25 minutes. On a day filled mostly with qualifying matches, fifth-seeded Marcel Granollers of Spain also entered the second with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 win over Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia, while Guido Pella of Argentina defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 7-6 (6), 6-4 to advance. http:///...-webb-giants-jersey/ . Halifax beat the Saint John Sea Dogs 7-5 on the strength of two goals apiece from Nikolaj Ehlers, Matt Murphy and Brent Andrews. Jonathan Drouin also scored and had three assists while Zachary Fucale made 17 saves for the Mooseheads (16-8-0), who led 6-1 after two periods. BATON ROUGE, La. -- After severe weather gave LSU an unscheduled -- and unwanted -- weekend off, the Tigers sound eager to finally move on to Game 2 under interim coach Ed Orgeron.LSU (3-2) returns to the field against Southern Mississippi (4-2) in Death Valley on Saturday night. The Tigers will try to build on their 42-7 demolition of Missouri on Oct. 1, when Orgeron, a former defensive assistant, made his debut in his new post and new offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger introduced tweaks designed to spread out defenses and make LSUs attack more balanced. Were chomping at the bit to play, LSU fullback John David Moore said this week, in the wake of the postponement of last weekends game between the Tigers and Florida Gators in Gainesville, Florida, because of Hurricane Matthew. Non-conference or conference game, we just want to play. While LSU will now play 11 regular season games instead of 12, the Tigers were able to reschedule Florida for Nov. 19, albeit at the expense of a non-conference game against South Alabama that previously had been scheduled that day. The game against the Gators also has been moved from Gainesville, Florida, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. But thats over a month away, and Orgeron emphasized the need to forget about Florida -- for now -- and focus on visiting Southern Miss.I know those guys are going to want to put on a good show in Louisiana, Orgeron said of the Golden Eagles. There are several players from Louisiana, several coaches from Louisiana, and I know this is a big game for them.LSU is unranked, but Southern Miss first-year coach Jay Hopson takes little comfort in that. Hopson figures the Tigers, who entered the season ranked fifth-nationally, are just a couple plays away from being unbeaten and ranked even higher. The Tigers were in game-winning field goal range late against Wisconsin, only to throw an interception. In its other loss, LSU appeared to have passed for a winning TD as time expired, only to have the play overturned on video review, when officials determined time expired before the snap.We know were playing a football team that had a close loss to Wisconsin and controversial end to Auburn, Hopson said. If they won both those games, theyd probably be rankedd No. Davis Webb Jersey. 2 or No. 3 in the nation.---Some other things to watch as the Golden Eagles visit Death Valley for just the third time in school history.FOREGOING FOURNETTE: LSU star running back Leonard Fournette has missed two games and Orgeron said he more than likely would sit out again this Saturday. Thats hardly cause for the Golden Eagles to breathe a sigh of relief. Sophomore Derrius Guice has rushed for more than 150 yards in each of his two starts, and LSU rushed for more than 400 yards without Fournette in its most recent game.UP-AND-DOWN MULLENS: Southern Miss veteran quarterback Nick Mullens has had another productive season, throwing for 1,874 yards and 16 touchdowns through six games. But hes also thrown eight interceptions after just 12 picks in 14 games last season. His completion percentage is down to 58.6 percent, down from 63 percent in 2015.EVOLVING OFFFENSE: LSU has had about three weeks to work in new wrinkles on offense that Orgeron said are designed to make the scheme more quarterback friendly, for Danny Etling, who passed for a season-high 216 yards in LSUs first game under Orgeron. First of all, its about protection. We gave up no sacks against Mizzou, Orgeron said. We want to make short, easy throws for Danny -- easy reads, give him an opportunity to do things that he does well. The things that he doesnt do well, we dont do.BRADLEYS BIG YEAR: Southern Miss nose tackle Dylan Bradley has had a breakout season, leading the team with 39 tackles, including 10 for a loss and five sacks. The 6-foot-1, 265-pounder played mostly at defensive end before moving inside under Hopson.DAUNTING DEFENSE: LSUs defense hasnt always stifled opposing offenses, but has been stingy about letting opponents into the end zone. LSU has allowed 13 field goals, but only five TDs. It would be good if we dont give up field goals, but I feel like if we give up (only) a field goal, its like winning, LSU linebacker Kendell Beckwith said.---AP college football website: www.collegefootball.ap.org---AP Sports Writer David Brandt in Jackson, Mississippi contributed to this report.
